Samsung Galaxy 5 aka Europa aka 550 aka GT-I5500

Saturday, January 29th, 2011 | Gadgets, Reviews, Tech-savvy | No Comments

Apart from the inscrutable naming scheme this is a pretty nice entry level smartphone. You may remember me ranting about smartphones a while ago, but as I started using more and more online services I thought it was time getting one. As I am still on my old contract (for another 7 months) I decided to get the cheapest “real” smartphone money can buy contract free. After some research I decided to get the above mentioned Samsung device, the Galaxy 5. It has Android 2.1 (I did not take anything below that version into consideration) and Samsung is one of the big smartphone manufactures of today. What I am missing is multi-touch, high-res screen, high-res camera and a camera flash. I can live with that for the time being. Apart from that this small toy is a full featured smartphone that runs all Android software as your big smartphones do. It even has GPS, but I didn’t get it to work yet “Your current location is temporarily unavailable” … found a fix … WTF?

Anyway, I am pretty happy with my entry level smartphone. I am linked to my Google Mail account, Twitter, Facebook, have kewl Apps like Shazam, ConnectBot or Wifi Analyzer and can waste some time playing Angry Birds.

Manowar vs. Turrican

Friday, January 21st, 2011 | Games, Movies, Reviews | 1 Comment

Recently I came across two things, Manowar on Malta and Turrican as one of my all time favourite games. This reminded me of a fact that should not be forgotten: The guys who did Turrican apparently were into Manowar as well – this is a comparison of the album art of Manowar’s “Kings of Metal” and the Turrican title screen (I guess M.T. stands for Manfred Trenz).

Hmm, those were the days … 😀

1001 Video Games You Must Play Before You Die

Wednesday, January 19th, 2011 | Books, Games, Reviews, Tech-savvy | No Comments

1001 (rather short) game reviews and a foreword by Populous mastermind Peter Molyneux. I simply had to buy this. I totally underestimated its dimension and weight though. This really is something for the display or the couch table. If you want a more serious and comprehensive read try Gamespite Quarterly.

A big heavy book that makes you reminisce. It covers great games from the seventies (Space Invaders, Asteroids) as well as recent hits like Heavy Rain or Mass Effect 2. There is just one thing missing. Turrican. I know that the Turrican series was especially well received in Germany, but it seems that folks abroad didn’t really get it. For me Turrican 1 & 2 are among the best games ever released. A pity they didn’t make it into this book. I wonder if everyone has a favourite game that this book misses and will be included in some re-release if enough people complain. 😛

Right now this beautiful book is on sale for as low as £9.40 an Amazon.

Oops, I did it. Web 2.0, I will participate. A little.

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011 | Misc, Tech-savvy | 5 Comments

I’ve been blogging for quite a while now, but I always boycotted all things Interwebz 2.0 bling bling like Twitter, Facebook and the like. Today I created a Twitter account (@npr77) and I guess I will even create a Facebook account to stay in touch with more people than just the guys at the pub (wave @Leo&Maria) … may not sound like a big thing for you, but for me it is something special. I got rid of a basic principle (“static html, IRC and plain text E-Mail is all I need really”) and now I’ll try to stay old skewl and still be open minded towards the mainstream hypes that are sooo not good enough for a grumpy geek – ah, I guess I will just boycott the next big thing then, or the one after that. For now I’ll just participate and see what it’s like. See you on some social media platform soon 🙂

Post scriptum I tried to register a Facebook account.

FAIL! Is this a sign? 😀
