Fedora 20 / Ubuntu GNOME 13.10 Post Installation Tasks

Friday, January 24th, 2014 | Linux, Tech-savvy

Again, some post installation tasks. I figure Fedora is a little bit too trigger happy on kernel updates, so I went back to go for the “default” Linux, but GNOME flavoured. Unity is not my cup of tea. It did not work as well as expected, so in the end I went back to Fedora. /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup anybody?

Here here we go:

– Terminal, 132×34, white on black
– still fix vi movement problem in Ubuntu

echo set nocompatible >> ~/.vimrc

– GNOME Shell Extensions: TopIcons
– install Java (jdk-7u51-linux-x64.tar.gz)

$ tar -xvzf jdk-7u51-linux-x64.tar.gz
$ sudo mv jdk1.7.0_51/ /opt/
$ cd /opt/
$ sudo ln -s jdk1.7.0_51 jdk
$ sudo update-alternatives --install "/usr/bin/java" "java" "/opt/jdk/bin/java" 1
$ sudo update-alternatives --install "/usr/bin/javac" "javac" "/opt/jdk/bin/javac" 1
$ sudo update-alternatives --install "/usr/bin/javaws" "javaws" "/opt/jdk/bin/javaws" 1
$ sudo update-alternatives --install "/usr/bin/jar" "jar" "/opt/jdk/bin/jar" 1
$ java -version
java version "1.7.0_51"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0_51-b13)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 24.51-b03, mixed mode)

– enable http://rpmfusion.org/ on Fedora
– install Truecrypt (sudoers: #Defaults requiretty, %wheel ALL = (root) NOPASSWD:/usr/bin/truecrypt), Audacious, Skype, Gimp, Eye of Gnome, gnome-mplayer…
– Tried Intel Linux Graphics Installer on Ubuntu (Haswell Linux seems to be not yet mature… I had quite a few glitches and flickering). Made me switch to Fedora again … glitches gone after updating the system after install.
Freemind

4 sudo unzip freemind-bin-1.0.0.zip -d /opt/freemind
$ sudo wget http://ftp.nluug.nl/os/Linux/distr/zenwalk/source/extra/xap/freemind/76812-freemind_v0.4.svg -O /opt/freemind/freemind.svg
$ vi ~/.local/share/applications/freemind.desktop
[Desktop Entry]
Name=Freemind
Exec=/opt/freemind/freemind.sh
Icon=/opt/freemind/freemind.svg
Type=Application
Categories=GTK;GNOME;Utility;

So far so good. A pity Ubuntu did not work … this is how my glitches looked like:
