Review: Sucker Punch (2011)

Sunday, June 26th, 2011 | Movies, Reviews | No Comments

Haha, in my last post I apologized for not posting for more than half a year blaming shitty films for that. The same day I saw Sucker Punch.

A young girl (Baby Doll) is locked away in a mental asylum by her abusive stepfather where she will undergo a lobotomy in five days’ time. The lines between reality and fantasy blur as Baby Doll and her four companions, as well as a mysterious guide, fight to retrieve the five items they need that will allow them to break free from their captors before it’s too late… (IMDb)

What should I say? Watching Sucker Punch was like riding a very good roller-coaster, fast and very well arranged. Score and picture impressed almost as much as Matrix did for me in the 90s – over the top action, slo-mo shots, set in a post-apocalyptic fantasy world, hot chicks fighting giant Samurai, Nazi Zombies (Dead Snow, anybody?) and the like. A perfect match for a brains-out evening.

7.5/10 – Finally a fantasy action film that made my jaw drop again. Not all the time, but quite a lot. Make sure you get this on the big screen or at least in an HD home cinema

Review: I Saw The Devil / Akmareul boatda (2010)

Friday, June 24th, 2011 | Movies, Reviews | No Comments

It’s been a while since I wrote a little review of a film I saw (@see Wild Target). This is mostly due to the fact that as a cinema enthusiast it gets harder and harder to see something that is new/interesting or even noteworthy – a lot of films just bore the crap out of me these days. Anyway, “I Saw The Devil” was different.

When his pregnant fiancée becomes the latest victim of a serial killer, a secret agent blurs the line between good and evil in his pursuit of revenge. (IMDb)

So yes, this is some kind of rape and revenge plot, a genre that I normally avoid. In this case I was eager to finally see this Korean film because I had already read a few quite promising reviews and ratings from Fantasy Filmfest screenings. Some said it was boring, some said it was a masterpiece. I have to agree with the latter. The film has three major ingredients imho: beautiful slow shooting (which may bore fans of fast paced action), interesting and well acted characters (loved both Oldboy‘s Min-sik Choi and A Bittersweet Life‘s Byung-hun Lee) and last but not least quite explicit violence. I read the rumour that it had to be cut several times even in Korea to prevent it from getting a “Restricted” rating which would have had it rendered impossible to screen or sell. Believe me, what’s left in there is still stomach twisting and quite enough to support the plot.

8.0/10 – Get prepared for beautiful yet nasty game of cat-and-mouse.

Review: Salt (2010)

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010 | Movies, Reviews | No Comments

Evelyn Salt is a CIA agent and highly respected by all, including her boss, Ted Winter. Out of the blue, a Russian spy walks into their offices and offers a vital piece of information: the President of Russia will be assassinated during his forthcoming visit to New York City to attend the funeral of the recently deceased U.S. Vice President. The name of the assassin: Evelyn Salt.

After watching one of the best Futurama Episodes so far (Season 6 Episode 7 The Late Philip J. Fry 9.0 / 10) I gave this flick a go. I expected nothing, just another Hollywood action boredom. But I got proven wrong. This is a very well done action / espionage thriller, with Angelina being the perfect match for … well, I don’t want to spoil anything – just let me say the action is brilliant, almost comically, but never in a bad way.

7.5 / 10 – A surprisingly good action thriller that makes up for the somewhat screwed up Wanted.

Review: Pontypool (2008)

Monday, August 24th, 2009 | Movies, Reviews | No Comments

Pontypool2008Winter in Canada, a guy is on it’s way to work. It’s early in the morning, still night, he is on his way to his morning shift working as a radio host. What starts as a normal work day soon evolves into a complete mess of news and facts of what is happening on the outside. The viewer stays with the moderator, just listening to the reports of bloodshed and a weird virus that is spread by words! “War of the Worlds” (the radio play!) meets “Tape“.

The main actor is really cool (Stephen McHattie), the story is a refreshing change to the straightforward “atomic waste” or “five kids in the wood” films. Unfortunately the story telling is not good, it just looses it’s logic half way through the film with just random events happening. Still, above average for good acting and a nice idea.

6.5/10 – quite well done but too far fetched and illogic

Review: Blindness (2008)

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008 | Movies, Reviews | No Comments

A strange disease is spreading, the “white blindness”. People are becoming blind by seeing only white. The story evolves around affected people who are quarantined in a building, left to themselves. Food supplies are short, suddenly the already blind people have an advantage over the newly infected and a broken leg can become a deadly situation when nobody is there to treat it.

What starts off with a lot of things that could supply a good story is portrayed in a quite boring way. There is no such thing as a real story, surviving is the only thing the imprisoned people do. Sometimes interesting, sometimes shocking (even disgusting), but never enough of any to make a good movie.

All together a mediocre flick, I guess the book might be more interesting, giving the chance that there is more focus on what people think rather than on what they do.

Review: The Descent (2005)

Saturday, November 29th, 2008 | Movies, Reviews | No Comments

It’s been the second time I saw this movie and it still makes me jump! Finally a scary but not a cheesy movie! Sometimes the story is drifting into an artistic angle, the way the characters are presented, camera movement and the more graphic scenes – everything seems to be deliberately exaggerated without becoming a splatter or gore movie.

The story evolves around a couple of women who do outdoor activities for fun, pretty rough stuff like rafting for example. This time they are going to descent into a cave. Only problem is, that someone didn’t want to take the scenic tourist’s route and chose an never before explored cave for their trip. Bad idea! 😛

A fun flick to watch, thrilling, shocking, sometimes even repelling. This is what I expect from a “descent” horror movie!

8.5/10 – Pretty much awesome!
